Hampton University (HU) is a coeducational, privately-endowed, historically black institution of higher education. Located in southeastern Virginia on the waterfront, this university is among the first black colleges in the nation and is regarded as a pioneer for Native American education. HU was founded in 1868 by Brigadier General Samuel Chapman Armstrong to meet the educational needs of newly freed blacks in the area. Mrs. Mary S. Peake taught in the first classroom, located outdoors in the shade of an oak tree that still stands today. Known as Emancipation Oak, it was under this very tree that the first Southern reading of the Emancipation Proclamation took place.

From its humble beginnings as the Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute to the prestigious university it has become, HU continues to emphasize the importance of lifelong learning in an ever-expanding global community.

Today, the school boasts more than 5,700 students that come from 49 states in addition to 35 territories and nations.
