Fort Monroe's Casemate Museum and National Monument: Historic Tours

Built in 1834 to protect the Hampton Roads waterway from attack, Fort Monroe National Monument is the country's largest stone fort and the only one surrounded by a moat. No longer an active military base, the fort and museum is a popular tourist destination, with fascinating architecture that transports visitors to a significant period in America's past. Get compelling insight into the area's incredible military history, when noted figures from the American Civil War found themselves prisoner of this formidable structure. The museum features the room where Jefferson Davis was a prisoner following the American Civil War. Enjoy free self-guided tours or explore miles of pristine beaches at Fort Monroe and enjoy beautiful views of the Chesapeake Bay.
