Built in 1920, Hampton Carousel is one of only 170 antique wooden merry-go-rounds still existing in the United States. A tribute to the skill of its creators, the attraction maintains its original oil paintings and mirrors, along with four dozen intricately-decorated horses. Rise and fall to the melodious strains of original band organ, as you and your family experience a rare and beautiful example of American folk art set amid the city's lovely downtown waterfront.
A rare example of American folk art, the Hampton Carousel was painstakingly carved from fine-grained hardwood back in 1920. Russian, Italian and German immigrant artisans were commissioned to carve and paint the stately chariots and prancing steeds. The ride has undergone numerous restoration campaigns, but still maintains most of its original materials. One of 170 antique wooden merry-go-rounds existing in the country, the carousel is restored to its original beauty and housed in its own pavilion on the downtown waterfront.
